Honda Urban EV on sale in the UK in 2019
The Honda Urban EV – revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2017 – is heading in to production and will go on sale in the UK and Europe in 2019.
The Honda Urban EV Concept turned up at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year as a retro-inspired electric City car. Which doesn’t sound like a great recipe, but it was actually totally convincing. It had styling rather reminiscent of an original VW Golf, a smaller footprint than a Honda Jazz, big glasshouse and just looked completely right.
At the time, Honda told us the Urban EV may be a concept, but that they were deadly serious about putting it in to production. And they are, and it will be on sale in the UK and Europe next year.
Announcing they will be taking orders in the UK and Europe from 2019, Honda has said they plan to make the production version of the Urban EV as close as possible to the concept. But there will be changes.
We can’t see the suicide doors staying or the LED displays to tap out messages, and the interior will probably have to a bit more mainstream to be cosy-effective.
What we don’t know, because Honda has never said, is what’s under the skin, but it’s almost certainly going to be a modest electric motor driving the front wheels with a battery big enough to give a sensible City Car range of, say, 150-200 miles.
Hit the right price point, and Honda could be on to a real winner.
