Will the Hyundai Veloster (pictured) get Hyundai's new engines?
Hyundai has revealed a pair of new engines – a 1.6 litre turbo petrol with 204bhp and a 2.0 litre diesel with 150bhp.
When we reported prices and specs last week for the new Hyundai Veloster, we were suitably impressed at what was on offer, with one exception – the engine.
We’d been hoping for a little more oomph from the successor to the very good Hyundai Coupe, and we were a little disappointed that the only engine on offer was a 138bhp diesel. But that could be changing.
Hyundai has revealed a pair of new engines at the Hyundai Kia International Powertrain Conference which – we hope – will find their way in to the new Hyundai Veloster next year.
The new petrol engine is a 1.6 litre twin scroll turbo 4-pot which has direct fuel injection and dual CVVT and can deliver 204bhp and 195lb/ft of torque, which should make the Veloster a lot more lively.
Not surprisingly, the new 1.6 litre turbo meets Euro5 standards and we would expect it to turn up in more than just the Veloster. The Hyundai i40 is a good candidate, but with the UK and Europe’s love affair with diesel we do worry Hyundai may decline to give us the option.
What we will undoubtedly see is the new 2.0 litre diesel lump. That has 150bhp and a very useful 282lb/ft of torque, which should make it a no-brainer across a lot of the Hyundai (and Kia) range, but in particular its SUV/Crossover offerings.
We tried to get hold of Hyundai to see if we can get confirmation of what the UK will get – and on what models – but we haven’t got an answer yet.
