McLaren 570GT now with MSO ‘Feather Wrap’ Option
The McLaren 570GT – McLaren’s softer, more luxurious GT – is now available with an innovative ‘Feather Wrap’ option inspired by biomimicry.
It’s just over a year since the McLaren 570GT arrived as a new model in McLaren’s Sport Series range, offering a slightly more luxurious take on the McLaren experience.Aided by a modified design which gave the car a new roof line and more headroom, the 570GT also came with reviseds suspension and a biggher boot, but still boasted McLaren’s 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8 which delivered a 0-62mph of 3.4 seconds.
But now McLaren has gone a step further and is offering a new ‘Feather Wrap’ option for the 570GT which promises to make the McLaren more aerodynamic and thus better suited to long journeys.
Produced by McLarens Special Operations (MSO) the Feather Wrap uses nearly 10,000 carbon-veined artificial feathers bonded to the 570GT’s body on a process which takes 300 hours to complete.
Robin Crane, McLaren’s Biomimicry Specialist, said:
Our engineers and designers have long been inspired by nature in our aim to create the lightest and most aerodynamic shapes on the road. We call this biomimicry.
And it was on a beautiful day walking around our Woking campus that one of us looked up at the birds circling our lake, then picked up a feather from the ground and placed it on a car. That turned into a conversation with the craftsmen and women at MSO that led to the creation of the Feather Wrap.
Despite its complexity, the wrap adds just 2.5kg of additional weight (no more than the paint), yet contribute to a huge drag reduction – and therefore smoother, more economical running – by vibrating and delaying the change to turbulent air as the 570GT accelerates.
No price yet from McLaren for the new Feather Wrap – which could roll out to further McLaren models in the coming years – although it is available to order from today (1 April 2017) at McLaren’s UK dealers.
