If you’ve been waiting for Mercedes answer to the BMW X4, your luck’s in – the new Mercedes GLC Coupe has gone on sale in the UK with prices starting at £40,580 for the entry level GLC 220d.

Revealed at the New York Motor Show earlier this year, the Mercedes GLC Coupe is the less practical take on the GLC SUV, sacrificing space and practicality for design and lifestyle. But sales of BMW’s X4 make it clear there are plenty of buyers happy with the compromise, so the GLC Coupe should do well.

To start things off there’s only a choice of the 2.1 litre diesel with either 168bhp in the GLC 220d or 201bhp in the GLC 250d, mated to Mercedes’ 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox and 4MATIC four wheel drive. The GLC 220d manages official economy of 56.5mpg and the 250d exactly the same.

You can have your GLC Coupe in either Sport or AMG Line trim, with standard stuff including Garmin Sat Nav, Park Assist, Artico fake leather, Keyless, Reversing Camera, LED headlights, heated front seats, sports suspension, electric tailgate and electric mirrors, black ash wood trim, 18″ alloys and diamond grille with black painted pins.

Opt for the AMG Line (an extra £1,495) and you get an AMG steering wheel, brushed steel sports pedals, AMG body kit, 19″ alloys and chrome pins for the grille.

As you’d expect, there are endless options to spend money on, including Premium and Premium Plus Packages  (£1495 and £2795), Lane Tracking (£595), Driver Assistance Package (£1695) and Night Package (£495).

The Mercedes GLC Coupe is now on sale at Mercedes UK dealers, costing from £40,580 for the GLC 220d Coupe Sport, with first customer cars due in September, by which time you might be able order some more interesting versions – like the GLC 350e plug-in and the GLC 43 AMG (the AMG GLC 63 will not be until 2017).
