Mercedes GLE 63 AMG Coupe teased on video for Detroit debut
The Mercedes GLE 63 AMG Coupe – the range-topping, most powerful version of Mercedes new GLE Coupe – is teased ahead of a Detroit Auto Show debut.
Just last week we reported that the Mercedes GLE 63 AMG Coupe, the AMG version of the new GLE Coupe (which is a coupe version of what used to be the ML – are you keeping up?), looked like it was heading for a debut at the Detroit Auto Show. And it looks almost certain it is.That’s because Mercedes has released a short video of the GLE 63 AMG Coupe on its Facebook page, and we really can’t see why they’d do that unless its reveal was imminent at Detroit.
A few years ago we’d have asked what the point of a big, coupe SUV was, but the mighty BMW X6 M – as ugly as any big SUV can be, but with performance that can crush a supercar – has proven car buyers can embrace the ugly if the package under the skin is worth it.
For the GLE 63 AMG Coupe we can’t believe it will be anything other than Mercedes new 4.0 litre turbo lurking under the bonnet, an engine that is already in the new AMG GT and C 63 AMG, but we do wonder how powerful it will be if it arrives in the GLE.
The C 63 AMG comes with just over 500bhp, but that’s a chunk down on the current ML 63 AMG which boasts 518bhp – and the X6 M’s 567bhp – so it would seem likely that if the GLE 63 is to get the new engine it will be the most powerful version to date from Mercedes.
As for how the GLE 63 AMG Coupe looks, it gets the usual butch bumpers, side sills, bigger air intakes, a fancy aerodynamic wing on the front grill and a plethora of AMG-badged surfaces.
We should find out more soon.
