Mercedes seem to be on a mission to fill niches in the car market they don’t currently compete in, so the news from Germany’s auto motor und sport that Mercedes are planning to rival the Audi TT and Porsche Panamera with new models, does seem credible.
So the idea that Mercedes will produce a baby AMG GT using the next generation A-Class platform does make a lot of sense, especially as the current A45 AMG has the sort of performance any sports car would be proud of.
Equally sensible is the idea that Mercedes will take the next generation E-Class underpinnings and bolt on a style-driven exterior and custom interior to produce a real rival to the Porsche Panamera – perhaps even an EV version. Again, why not? We’re sure that with modern production methods it will be both cost-effective and profitable
It could all be speculation by the German media, but it does make sense. And even if this turns out to be not completely right – despite auto motor und sport citing insiders for the info – there’s no doubt Mercedes are heading down the ‘Boutique’ route wherever possible.
So cars to rival the Audi TT and Porsche Panamera could well be just the tip of a very big iceberg to come.
