Mercedes recall 400,000 cars in the UK over airbag concerns
Mercedes is recalling around 400,000 cars in the UK over concerns a faulty steering column spring could trigger the airbag to deploy.
Mercedes-Benz has announced a recall of cars sold in the UK in the last six years, affecting more than half its range and around 400,000 cars. The fault identified is with a spring in the steering column which Mercedes has discovered can fail, and if it does it can turn on the airbag warning light.
But the major concern is that if the spring breaks and there are any faults with the car’s earthing then the airbag could actually deploy.
Mercedes say it is directly contacting owners to organise the repair, but if the airbag warning light does come on owners are advised to contact Mercedes Roadside Assistance immediately on 00800 5777 7777.
Mercedes say the fix will take about an hours and that it will be done free of charge.
Which Mercedes models are affected by the recall?
As far as we can see, it’s about half of Mercedes entire range in the UK. The models affected were built from 2011 to 2017. They are:
- Mercedes A Class
- Mercedes CLA
- Mercedes GLA
- Mercedes B CLass
- Mercedes E Class*
- Mercedes GLC
*The latest E-Class isn’t affected
