More Volvo SUVs on the way – including an XC100 to sit above the XC90 (pictured)
The rumours continue to grow that Volvo are planning to extend their SUV offering with new larger and smaller SUVs. Probably the Volvo XC100 and XC30.
The changes at Volvo since Geely took the reins have been significant, with Volvo creating its own USP in the Premium market place, and doing very well from it.It started with the new Volvo XC90, revealed in 2014, and now includes both a new XC60 and all-new XC40, as well as impressive offerings through the 60 and 90 Series of saloons and estates.
Next up will be the replacement for the current V40- the last car that’s ‘old’ Volvo – which is expected before long, and of course more electrification and the arrival of the electric XC40. But what comes after that?
The rumours have been around for a while that Volvo are planning to deliver a Volvo XC100, an SUV sitting above the XC90 and aimed, primarily, at the US and China markets.
That was mooted a few months ago by the Swedish press, claiming the arrival of the new SPA 2 Platform for Volvo’s bigger cars will see an XC100 launched to take the fight to cars like the BMW X7, Mercedes GLS and even the full-size Range Rover.
Now Auto Express has revealed a few snippets about Volvo’s plans for more SUVs, quoting a conversation with Volvo boss Hakan Samuelsson where he said that Volvo are currently considering adding cars in new segments to their range. He said:
We are not excluding the idea of additions, especially in very core segments like the SUV. I think we are looking into this possibility now. You should not exclude the idea that there might be a bigger one, but maybe also a smaller one. We will surprise you about that in the future.
It seems likely we’ll see at least a couple of new SUVs from Volvo in the next couple of years, with the Volvo XC100 looking to be a dead cert (and the right name), but a smaller SUV could be the XC30 or even XC20.
