The next generation Volkswagen Passat is detailed by VW ahead of a July reveal and a Paris debut. Loses weight and gets more economical.

The eighth generation Volkswagen Passat is detailed today by VW with design sketches and the news that the all-new Passat will lose 85kg in weight and get more economical engines.
Thanks to a weight loss of upt 85kg – achieved by using high-strength, hot-formed steel and aluminium in some areas – the new Passat will offer fuel efficiency improved by up to 20 per cent and, although the exterior dimensions of the new Passat are slightly smaller than the current model, the new Passat will offer more room for passengers and luggage.
A highlight for the new Passat will be a new 2.0 litre bi-turbo diesel offering 237bhp and getting a seven-speed DSG ‘box and VW’s 4MOTION four wheel drive. There will also be a plug-in hybrid with the ability to travel as an EV for up to 31 miles and a range of up to 600 miles.
New technology includes a 12.3″ TFT virtual instrument cluster, heads-up display, a Modular Infotainment system, a better 360-degree Area View and a new Park Assist that includes Trailer Assist./
Other goodies include Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert, Traffic Jam Assist, Emergency Assist and City emergency Braking as well as LED headlights and optional LED headlights.
It looks like the new VW Passat could be a winner, and we’ll find out moire when it’s fully revealed in early July.
