Nissan x OPUS Concept Camper uses old LEAF batteries for ‘Off-Grid’ Power

The Nissan x OPUS Concept Camper is revealed as an Opus Camper using Nissan’s old LEAF batteries to deliver off-grid power for up to a week.

What to do with old electric car batteries is a problem which is going to vex car makers in years to come, but Nissan has come up with a way of re-purposing them with the Nissan x OPUS Concept Camper.

Incorporating Nissan Energy ROAM – a portable weatherproof pack of re-purposed EV batteries – the Nissan x OPUS Concept is heading for display at The Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show at the NEC from today (19 February 2019).

The ROAM’s lithium-ion cells are recovered from old Nissan EVs and mounted in a special compartment at the front of the OPUS to power the 230v and 12v circuit, delivering up to seven days of power with a bit of help from solar panels.

The system can 700Wh of storage capacity and power output of up to 1kW, and if the 400W solar panels don’t keep things running smoothly it takes around an hour to recharge from a 230v socket.

The Opus inflates in to life in around 90 seconds, and inside there’s cooking equipment, seating/dining area and accommodation for six.
