Range Rover SV Coupe REVEALED
The Range Rover SV Coupe arrives as a limited run of 999 two-door, range-topping Range Rovers, with prices starting at a not insignificant £240,000.
It looks like a slightly differently proportioned Range Rover with two doors instead of four. But the new Range Rover SV Coupe actually has an all-new body, courtesy of JLR’s SVO, which uses just the bonnet and a bit of the tailgate from a production Range Rover. As a result, the Range Rover Coupe ends up a bit longer, a bit wider and a bit lower than the Range Rover, and its doors look about three miles long and need power-close to handle. But it’s imposing, especially with its 23″ wheels.
The Coupe pays homage to the original two-door Range Rover with those two big doors, and we wonder if Land Rover should have kept the Velar name to tag this range-topper (Velar was the code name for the original RR)?
But this car is an opulent, sybaritic toy for the most wealthy – not a workhorse which happens to scrub up well – with its bespoke body and interior – available in different colour leathers for front and back – and its £240,000 starting price is really the base price. Land Rover will be expecting all 999 buyers to dig deep for personalisation.
Despite its limited edition opulence the SV Coupe is still Range Rover under that new skin, with all the off-road gubbins present and correct and Land Rover’s most powerful iteration of the supercharged V8 under the bonnet, delivering 557bhp and 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds.
Will the SV Coupe turn in to a regular model for Land Rover? It could, but there would need to be a bigger appetite than 999 cars a year to make it viable.
