The Rolls-Royce Hyperion – a one-off 2008 Phantom DHC built by Pininfarina – is up for sale again, but it’s now less than half the price it was.
The Rolls-Royce Hyperion isn’t a car that springs quickly to mind when you think of Rolls-Royce specials, but it is a special car.
Built by Pininfarina in 2008 for collector Roland Hall, it’s based on a Phantom Drop Head Coupe and was designed to evoke the style of 1930s luxury convertibles; a time when Rolls-Royce supplied the underpinnings and legendary coachbuilders the looks.
It was the last car creation supervised by Andrea Pininfarina before he tragically died at just 51 in a scooter accident, and it was designed to be more than just a one-off.
The plan was to use this single Hyperion to convince the world’s wealthy they should commission one, but the project never took off.
In fact, this remains the only Hyperion ever made and, you might think, will garner a huge premium because of that. But not necessarily.
Back in 2009, this car was up for sale for €4.5 million, but now it’s surfaced for sale at Alain Class in Dubai at a far more reasonable – although not exactly cheap – €2 million (around £1.75 million).
It’s an impressive looking thing, and it has in its favour that it is pretty much bog standard Phantom DHC under the skin. Although a similar age DCH would cost less than £150k.
If the Pininfarina body – and the fact it was Andrea Pininfarina’s last project – grabs your attention, perhaps the premium is now acceptable?
