The first proper look at the VW ID.4 ELECTRIC SUV
The next instalment in Volkswagen’s electric offensive is previewed by a photo of the VW ID.4 electric SUV in camouflage at the Guangzhou Motor Show.
We’ve seen the start of Volkswagen’s plans to get everybody and his dog in to an electric car with the arrival of the VW ID.3, to all intents and purposes an electric replacement for the VW Golf, although the Golf itself will soldier on for a few more years yet.But we know the ID.3 is just the start, and that next up will be the ID.4, an electric SUV aimed at a more global market and readying itself to take on the Tesla Model Y when they both arrive on sale in 2021, as well as grabbing sales from the Kia Niro and Hyundai Kona electric models.
We have had a bit of a glimpse of the ID.4 in a box in Frankfurt, but now we get a proper look, albeit with a car covered in green and black camouflage, as VW show the ID.4 at the Guangzhou Motor Show (above).
The styling of the ID.4 looks set to follow the lead of the ID.3 as VW seek to establish an identity for their electric ID range, but its SUV body – likely also to be offered in ‘Coupe’ guise too – will hit the Zeitgeist more than the ID.3 Hatch, and will be sold in the US too, unlike the ID.3.
It’s expected to come with a similar choice of battery capacities as the ID.3, but will be offered in 4WD versions too, with the ID Crozz Concept which preview it getting over 300bhp and probably pointing at a top of the range output.
But it’s going to be a while before you can get your hands on a VW ID.4 – think summer 2021.
