Michael Schumacher is the Stig! The Update
It is nice to be ahead of the game.
We received umpteen emails after we ran a story last week about Top Gear revealing the identity of the Stig as Michael Schumacher in the opening episode of the new series. It is astonishing how much people love the show (but we include ourselves in that). Most didn’t believe it would happen, but it did.
But if you read our story you’d realise that it was just a Top Gear set-up. No one can seriously think that the Stig is Michael Schumacher. JC earns a few bob from TG (and May and Hammond don’t get paid peanuts) but does anyone seriously think the TG budget would run to Michael Schumacher (Ralf, maybe..)?
But if you look at the reaction round the internet it’s astonishing how many people are still arguing about whether or not Michael is the Stig. Let’s make it simple. Stig #1 – Black Stig – was Perry McCarthy. Stig #2 – White Stig – is Ben Collins. There may have been the odd fill-in Stig (the beauty of that helmet), but that’s it.
Good opener to the show, though. The Jaguar XK120 was absolutely beautiful, but I think the team missed a trick by not putting JC on the Vincent. Would he have got even as far as the M25? We doubt it. May would have suited the steam engine better (wasn’t it glorious?) leaving the Hamster in the XK120. But the Race worked really well.
Just one gripe. Why is the Ferrari FXX on the Lap Board? Astonishing lap, admittedly, but as it’s not road legal they may as well leave the F1 time up there. It’ll have to come down!
Looks likely to be a good series, and no sign of budget cutting or token women presenters. Good.
