Toyota confirms sticking accelerator fix

The Toyota Recall Fix

The Toyota fix for the sticking accelerator problem (click image for full size)

Toyota has announced the fix for the sticking accelerator issue which has resulted in the recall of millions of Toyotas worldwide.

It’s been a fraught time for Toyota with the recall of millions of cars around the world to remedy a faulty accelerator pedal with the potential to stick. And no one – Toyota seemingly included – was too sure exactly how the car maker was going to address such a mammoth problem despite the  Toyota Recall. But it seems the fix has been sorted.

The fix is to reinforce the pedal assembly by way of a precision-cut steel reinforcement bar which will be installed into the assembly that will reduce the surface tension between the friction shoe and the adjoining surface. With this reinforcement in place, the excess friction that can cause the pedal to stick is eliminated.

Toyota say they have rigorously tested the fix and it works on pedals that were already demonstrating the sticking problem and so will solve the problem fully.

But Toyota still haven’t worked out just how many cars in Europe will need the fix, but it could be as high as 1.8 million.

As this issue is of huge concern to Toyota owners, we’ll reiterate the advice we’ve previously given. If you’re concerned about the problem and what to do if it happens to you, have a look at the Toyota sticky pedal advice video we posted a few days ago. If you need to speak to someone then call Toyota GB Customer Relations on 0800 1388 744.

But most of all, despite this being a prize pain, there is probably no need to worry. The chances of it happening to your Toyota are very small and, if you read our advice and are prepared, you should be able to control the car even if the worst happens.

And just so you don’t have to go hunting, the list of recalled models in the UK and Europe is:

  • Aygo (Feb 2005 – Aug 2009)
  • iQ (Nov 2008 – Nov 2009)
  • Yaris (Nov 2005 – Sep 2009)
  • Auris (Oct 2006 – 5 Jan 2010)
  • Corolla (Oct 2006 – Dec 2009)
  • Verso (Feb 2009 – 5 Jan 2010)
  • Avensis (Nov 2008 – Dec 2009)
  • RAV4 (Nov 2005 – Nov 2009)

We’re also assuming that the same fix will apply to the Peugeot 107 and the Citroen C1.
