It’s not real surprise that new car registrations in the UK have reached a ten year high in 2014 with total registrations hitting 2,476,435, but the 9.3 per cent jump on 2013 was even higher than had been expected.
The 2.47 million total was second only to Germany in Europe and ahead of France, Italy and Spain.
Noticeable trends include the rise in ‘premium’ brands, superminis and SUV/Crossover models, and the big jump of ultra low emission vehicles – they quadrupled in 2014 – was impressive too, although at just 14,498 they were an almost insignificant blip in the total sales figures, and demand for diesels fell as buyers started to realise they’re just not as ‘clean’ a buy as they’d been led to believe.
Top sellers for 2014 were the Ford Fiesta (131,254), Ford Focus (85,140) and Vauxhall Corsa (81,783), and the SMMT are predicting sales will continue to rise in 2015, albeit at a slower rate than in recent years.
