Rowan Atkinson’s 1991 Mercedes 500E
A 1991 Mercedes 500E – an E-Class built by Porsche – owned twice by Rowan Atkinson is crossing the blocks at Classic Car Auctions without reserve.
We all know Rowan Atkinson (star of Mr Bean and Black Adder, if you need reminding) is something of a car nut, owning a wide range of interesting cars from McLaren F1 to Land Rover Defender. But Atkinson’s life has changed somewhat in recent years (family Mk 2) and it seems to have left him unsure where his cars fit in to his new world.
The McLaren F1 he’d owned from new was sold in 2015, and he’s been divesting himself of everything from a Land Rover Defender to a Lancia Thema 8.32. But there’s one car he can’t seem to get from under his skin – the Mercedes 500E.
The Mercedes 500E was an E-Class built for Mercedes by Porsche in the early 90s, all in LHD with a 5.0 litre V8 delivering 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds. Only 29 ever sold in the UK.
Atkinson bought a 500E new in 1991, but flogged it four years later. But in 2015 he couldn’t resist buying another, this time a 1993 model.
But in 2017 he managed to buy back his original 500E, which meant he had no need for his 1993 500E, which he proceeded to flog for £71,300 last year. But now he’s getting rid of his original 500E – again.
Classic Car Auctions (CCA) have Atkinson’s 500E up for grabs in their May auction, and it comes with no reserve and a sensible guide price to allow for a bit of tidying.
It might be worth a punt, even if you just keep it locked away until Atkinson decides he wants to buy it back again.
