The Audi R8 Spyder V8 - now confirmed
As expected, Audi are to make a V8 version of the R8 Spyder. No price confirmed but on sale late Summer 2010.
It never takes a genius to work out what Audi plans to do with every model in its range – expand it. And if they haven’t got a model in their range that fills a niche then they make one to fill it. And so rolls on the Audi world domination plan. Thankfully the cars they produce are a notch or two up on most makers’ fayre, so we’re not complaining.
And so it is with the Audi Supercar – the Audi R8. When Audi launched the R8 it came with ‘just’ a 4.2 litre V8, but that was still enough for most to proclaim the R8 as probably the most convincing effort of supercar-challenger from a major manufacturer.
But petrolheads are a picky bunch. We moaned that the R8 was a bit too tame; too well made; too ‘safe’. Abusrd when you think about it, but so it was. And so Audi dropped in the 5.2 litre in to the R8 and created a German version of the Gallardo for what amounted to an extra £10k to silence some of the criticisms.
Of course it was then time for the convertible. So we got the Audi R8 5.2 V10 Spyder. The same massive V10 but this time with a dose of fresh air and a big price tag. And petrolheads moaned that the R8 Spyder was a good car, but a bit pricey (starting point is £112k). So Audi has decided to launch the Audi R8 4.2 V8 Spyder – just as we told you in February – as an ‘Entry Level’ droptop option for the R8.
And that’s about it. Audi hasn’t sent us pictures so we assume the car looks the same as the V10. It gets a manual option, smaller wheels and normal dampers (but you can spec it up). And they’ve told us no prices.
£99,950 as a starter sounds about right, though
