Land Rover revealed the Ranger Rover Evoque last week and also the involvement of Victoria Beckham with the interior design. Good move?
The Range Rover Evoque finally made its debut – of sorts – at a party at Kensington Palace last week to celebrate 40 years of Range Rover. I say ‘of sorts’ because we got no new detail, just a view of a car that looked to all intents and purposes just like the original LRX concept except it said Range Rover on the bonnet instead of Land Rover.
But what we did get was Victoria Beckham. Posh Spice. Vicki Adams. David’s ‘er indoors. Victoria is apparently going to be a big part of designing the interior of Land Rover’s new baby Range Rover. It would seem that this joint enterprise is so well advanced that Gerry McGovern (LR’s design boss) had taken Victoria to lunch to discuss the Evoque. Which we guess must have been one of the smaller expense claims submitted this year.
We understand that it was Victoria who approached Land Rover wanting to be a part of the new Evoque. Which we understand. Victoria is a master at making a modest talent go a very long way. And for that we admire her. But is the association good for Land Rover?
We did a straw poll amongst the women in our life to get an idea of what women think of Victoria. Because it’s clear that Land Rover are targeting city dwelling women with the Evoque. Or metrosexual men. And as we don’t know many metrosexual men we had to make do with our women’s point of view.
This was in no way scientific – far from it – but it did cover teens to octogenarian. The most positive feedback we got was that Victoria’s clothing designs are a cut above the average. Is Victoria inspirational? No. Do you admire Victoria’s style? No. Is Victoria a good role model? No. Does Victoria have good taste. Yes and no (we thinks the yes vote related to David). Would Victoria inspire you to buy anything? No.
Which doesn’t auger well for the Evoque marketing push. We understand the thinking behind the VB association. But if you’re going to go that route there are surely better choices.
Maybe if we were a bit more Metrosexual we’d get it.
