New Porsche World Premier at LA Motor Show. But what is it?

Porsche are taking the new 911 Carrera for its US première at the LA Motor Show, but are promising a new Porsche world première too. Of what?

With the Los Angeles Motor Show looming later this month, car makers are starting to tease. And Porsche are teasing with their offerings for LA with the promise of a world premier of a new Porsche.

All Porsche has said about their new car is that it boasts impressive performance, has dynamic looks and offers unadulterated driving pleasure. Which is a statement Porsche PR are very willing to make about any Porsche, from a Cayman to a Cayenne.

The safe bet is the reveal of the 911 Cabriolet. Porsche are taking the new 911 to LA for its North American debut, and it would make sense that they will top that with the soft top version of the 911. But there are many other possibilities.

We could see the Porsche Cajun making its first appearance – Porsche’s take on the Audi Q5 – as a concept, as that’s due in a couple of years time. A concept about now would make sense.

Other possibilities include the new Porsche Cayman or Porsche Boxster. Both are close to being ready (as we saw in a video recently of new Porsches in San Franciso), and if Porsche brings either then they will probably be production-ready debuts.

Slightly more far-fetched are concepts based on the Panamera. We’ve talked about a two-door coupe take on the Panamera to create a GT car – a spiritual successor to the Porsche 928 – and we could even see a concept pointing towards a smaller Panamera – dubbed Pajun.

A final thought is the production-ready version of the Porsche 918 Spyder, Porsche’s replacement for the Carrera GT. We know from those on the waiting list for Porsche’s new hypercar that there are changes to the production version of the 918.

Porsche recently has a series of factory tours for those on the waiting list, and the 918 is well on the way. That said, the information we have is that the 918 won’t start appearing until 2013, so maybe it’s a little early for a production-ready version – even one that’s just production-ready in body – to appear.
