Two of the first cars to benefit from the UK Car Scrappage allowance were £60,000 Nissan GT-Rs
We’re not exactly fans of the Scrappage Scheme here, but we can see a degree of logic in it. But the system is too poorly conceived (and puts too big an onus on the car makers to match the taxpayers contribution) to be really effective. Yes, the Government put some conditions in place to stop widespread abuse, but not enough.
We’ve heard tales of forged V5s to get round the 12 month ownership requirement, and it’s pretty clear that some car makers have undertaken to take cars under the scheme only against list price new cars. Which probably means they’re getting more for their cars than they were before the scheme was introduced. And, unlike every other scheme in place round the world, there is no emissions criteria for the new car the allowance helps. Which is a bit odd, and shows how poorly drafted the legislation was. Quelle surprise!
But today What Car? are reporting that two of the first cars to be sold under the Scrappage Scheme were Nissan GT-Rs! It seems clear that this wasn’t the sort of car the Scrappage scheme was supposed to encourage, but we must take our hats off to the two buyers who managed to rustle up a 10 year old car in their name to get £2,000 off a £60,000 car. Every little helps!
As we reported just the other day, Nissan GT-Rs can actually be bought at list price without any wait at the moment if you know where to look. So it’s unlikely that these two opportunists are long-standing waiters for a GT-R, much more likely that they read our news and jumped at the chance of saving a few quid!
