The Volkswagen Design Vision GTI is a one-off Golf GTI built to show at this week’s Worthersee Show as a track-focused, lowered and lightened Golf with 500bhp.

The Design Vision GTI is built to show what a Golf built for racing would look like – and perhaps point to future evolutions of VW’s most successful car – and is built on the same MQB platform as the regular GTI. It’s a bit shorter (15mm) than a regular Golf, a chunk wider (71mm) and a lot lower (57mm) which conspires to make the Design Vision GTI much more aggressive looking than its mainstream sibling.
Power comes from a 3.0 litre V6 with two turbos – good for 500bhp and 413lb/ft of torque – which is driven to all four wheels through a DSG ‘box and can scoot to 62mph in a supercar-like 3.9 seconds on its way to 186mph.
The Design Vision GTI still looks like a Golf, but with the design elements taken to the extreme. There’s still a honeycomb grill and the black red and white colour theme is very GTI. But the headlights are set back, the overhangs are minimal, door handles in the shape of a red loop, a stripped out cabin with roll bar, big sills and the familiar C-pillars pull away from the body in to big rear wheel arches.
It’s a bonkers GTI, but the VW Design Vision GTI is perhaps what a Scirocco or VW Coupe should look like.

The Golf which had a W12 engine (641bhp) was driven by Jeremy Clarkson; he said it was undriveable around corners.
