Peugeot are planning to launch a four-door coupe based on the 308 – and probably called the Peugeot 408 GT – to span the gap between the 308 and 508.

The market for smaller four-door coupes has grown in recent years, and it looks like the Mercedes CLA – the four-door coupe version of the Mercedes A-Class – is a runaway success.
The Peugeot 407 was a larger two-door coupe – the not quite as convincing update for the very good 406 coupe – which had an old-world coupe feel and was very much a niche product in Peugeot’s range.
But a new Peugeot 408 GT Coupe is planned to be much more mainstream, based on the 308 but with the much-in-demand swoopy four-door coupe styling.
Auto Bild are reporting that Peugeot has signed-off on the 408 GT for production in 2016, with the range of petrol and diesel engines carried over from the 308 and be a budget offering to take on not just the CLA but cars like the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe too.
Could the Peugeot 408 GT help Peugeot carve a successful budget niche for itself? It’s possible.
