The coupe version of the Mercedes ML – which gets the GLE moniker – was revealed at the beginning of December, and it looks like Mercedes are going to be quick off the mark with a range-topping AMG version – the Mercedes GLE 63 AMG Coupe.
What we don’t yet know is what will power the new GLE 63 AMG, but logic says it will eschew the 5.5 litre V8 we saw in the ML 63 AMG in favour of the new 4.0 litre turbo V8. Assuming that’s the case, we could see anything from around 460bhp to 504bhp.
Mercedes already has a variety of outputs for the 4.0 litre V8, with the new AMG GT offering 456bhp in standard guise and a more fulsome 503bhp in the GT S, and the new Mercedes C 63 AMG comes in with 469bhp or 503bhp.
But with the current ML 63 AMG already offering more power than either the AMG GT or new C 63 AMG, it seems likely we’ll see the 4.0 litre V8 in the new GLE 63 AMG heading towards 550bhp rather than the 503bhp we’ve see so far.
All will be revealed – if the Germans have it right – at Detroit.
