It seems to have taken forever for the Mercedes AMG Gt to arrive, and now it has we get not one but two variations- the AMG GT and AMG GT S.
But despite that – and looks that are very much updated SLS – the AMG GT will have supercar levels of performance and will cause something of a nervous twitching with Porsche and the 911 and Jaguar and the new F-Type Coupe.
Both versions of the AMG GT get the new 4.0 litre V8, with the GT getting 456bhp from it and the GT S a more fulsome 503bhp. T hat’s enough to get the GT to 62mph in 4.0 seconds and the GT S in a very respectable 3.8s.
Under the skin of the AMG Gt sits an aluminium spaceframe – like the SLS, but shorter – which helps the GT S weigh less than both the 911 and F-Type, and the look of the AMG could almost be considered a good mix of 911 and F-Type too, with a chunk of SLS DNA thrown in – long bonnet, big haunches, aggressive nose and sweeping roof. It’s actually a good looking car. Perhaps not F-Type Coupe good looking, but not far off.
Suspension is double wishbones and a manual diff on the GT and an electronic one on the GT S model, with the GT S getting adaptive dampers -offering Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus – and there’s even a Dynamic Plus Package that adds active engine mounts plus the option of ceramic brakes.

The Mercedes AMG GT Interior
Inside the AMG looks as you would expect with a thumping great centre console, four central vents, sports seats and a low ‘cockpit’ experience for driver and passenger.
It’s an impressive package with good looks, the promise of a great drive and proper performance for prices that will start at £70k (or thereabouts) less than the old SLS AMG, despite performance – certainly in the AMG GT S – that’s pretty much a match. Something tells us the AMG GT and GT S are going to rack up some impressive sales numbers for Mercedes.
The first UK AMG GTs arrive in April 2015.
