Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti is the MOST expensive car sold at auction. Or is it?

A 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti has sold in auction in Paris for a world record €32.1 million. But does that make it the most expensive car ever?

If you look at the most expensive cars ever sold at auction, all but one are Ferraris. And it looks like the most expensive car ever sold at auction award has just gone to a stunning 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti, sold in Paris for €32.1 million.

Only four Ferrari 335 S Scagliettis were ever made, and this car has been tucked up in a private collection for the last 40 years.

The car was first driven – at the 1957 Sebring 12 Hours – by Brit Peter Collins and Frenchman Maurice Trintignant, by Mike Hawthorn in the 1958 Le Mans 24 Hours and by Stirling Moss at the 1958 Cuba Grand Prix.

It’s been owned subsequently by people like Luigi Chinetti – the founder of the North American Racing team – but since 1970 it’s been part of the Bardinon collection.

Now this Ferrari – chassis number #0674 – is heading to a new home after its new owner forked out €32.1 million for it, which looks like a world record price for any car at auction. But that rather depends on your perspective.

The previous record holder was a Ferrari 250 GTO which sold at a Pebble Beach auction by Bonhams in 2014 for $38.1 million which, at the time, was €28.5 million.

But the exchange rate has changed quite a bit since the summer of 2014, and the €32.1 million this Ferrari fetched now translates to $35.7 million.

So it seems this 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti IS the most expensive car ever sold at auction – unless you’re an American.
