The Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S – a stripped-out performance Golf – has sold out in the UK, even with prices starting at £33,995.
It’s probably all but impossible to count the number of different Golf models you can buy, but one Golf you can no longer buy is the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S.The Golf GTI Clubsport S was revealed back in May as part of VW’s celebration of the Golf’s 40th birthday, with Volkswagen following in the footsteps of supercar makers by offering a car with all the comfort stripped out – but at a premium price.
That means, in the Golf GTI Clubsport S, you have to do without back seats and much of the sound insulation as VW cut weight to 1280kg, but they have compensated for that with a Nurburgring chassis setting to mark this Golf’s record for a FWD production car, 19″ alloys, diff lock, XDS+, racing seats and Clubsport bumpers.
With 306bhp from its 2.0 litre turbo the Golf GTI Clubsport S can get to 62mph in 5.8 seconds, this Golf is lively, but not startlingly so.
We’d guessed, when the Golf GTI Clubsport S was revealed, VW would probably want around £35k for each of the 150 cars coming to the UK out of the 400 being built, and we weren’t far off as the list price is £33,995.
But even at that price, a price that would buy you a 4WD (quicker) Golf R or a (much quicker too) 4WD Ford Focus RS, the Golf GTI Clubsport S has sold out already.
Still, if you’re desperate for a hair shirt performance Golf, the classifieds will doubtless soon offer you options – at a premium.
