It’s only a couple of days since Mercedes released another trickle of information on the Mercedes SLS AMG, but the industry rumourmill is now working overtime on the prospect of an electric Mercedes SLS.
According to the guys at Autocar, Mercedes are planning an eDrive version of the SLS Gullwing to launch in 2015. Now that does seem an awfully long way off, but if it’s new tech they’re proposing then the gestation period is probably realistic.
Apparantly, an electric SLS will utilise a couple of 98KW motors – one at each wheel – which will deliver a total of 524bhp. This level of power will give the Mercedes SLS eDrive a 0-60 time of under 4 seconds, which would put it ahead of anything available at the moment. But that probably won’t be the case by 2015, such is the pace of development at the moment.
But the range isn’t exactly startling, with something around 100 miles from an eight hour charge. By 2015 that won’t be remotely acceptable, which makes us wonder just how much truth there is in the rumour. And if there is truth in the rumour, then it seems likely that the spec – at least in terms of charge time and range – is based on now, rather than 2015.
Still, nice to speculate.
