Porsche 959 ‘Speedster’ hoping for £1.3 million at Coys Techno Classica auction

Porsche 959 ‘Speedster’ hoping for £1.3 million at Coys

A one-off Porsche 959 Speedster is heading for Coys Techno Classica auction at Essen next month, where it has an estimate of up to £1.3 million.

Techno Classica is probably the world’s biggest classic car event, held each year in Essen in Germany and attracting huge numbers, displaying seemingly endless classic car goodies and showcasing some of the greatest classic cars in the world.

So important is the Techno Classica event that Land Rover could think of nowhere better to get to the biggest number of classic car fans when they announced the launch of Land Rover Heritage, and more classic cars probably change hands in a week in Essen than anywhere else.

That’s doubtless why Coys are once more back at Essen for their Techno Classica sale on 8th of April , and in amongst some interesting metal – including one of the first 200 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwings and a 1938 BMW 328 Roadster – we noticed a bit of an oddity – a 1987 Porsche 959 Speedster.

Now anyone who knows anything about Porsche knows that the Porsche 959 was the 918 Spyder of its day, but unlike the 918 Spyder the 959 came with a roof. A fixed one – on every single 959.

But this 959 doesn’t have a fixed roof, and that’s because its original owner – German racing driver Jurgen Lassig – made a bit of a mess of it on the Autobahn, rolled it and totalled it.

Apparently, it was subsequently sold to a new owner who got Auto Becker to rebuild it with a completely original spec from the roof down, but with 911 Speedster bits on top. Why? Who knows.

But that now means this is the world’s only 959 Speedster which, if this were a Porsche-built Speedster, would be worth far more than a regular 959. But as it’s not we can’t really see it reaching the estimate of €1.2-1.5 million.

Which is a bit of a shame, because even with its Speedster top it’s still a stunning, 2.9 litre, twin turbo, flat-six Porsche that can get to 62mph in 3.7 seconds and hit 198mph, figures a modern supercar would love to boast.

Yet this Porsche is 30 years old.
