Ford Fiesta KNOCKED of its perch as UK’s best-selling car
The Ford Fiesta has failed to be the UK’s best-selling car in June – for the first time in three years – beaten by the VW Golf as sales drop 4.8 per cent.
It almost seems unnecessary, month after month, reporting what’s the best-selling car in the UK, because it’s always the Ford Fiesta. But now, for the first time in three years, the Ford Fiesta has been beaten to the top spot – by only 207 units, admittedly – by the Volkswagen Golf, with the Ford Focus filling the third spot.
Ford’s take on the news is sensible enough, claiming they are still the best-selling car maker in June, and the sales of the Fiesta have taken a hit because the new Fiesta only arrives at dealers this month, so registrations were a bit depressed in June as buyers wait for the new car. And the Fiesta is still, by far, the best selling car in the UK so far in 2017.
But overall registrations for June were down by 4.8 per cent compared to 2016 – the second fall in a row – and by 1.3 per cent compared to the same period last year.
There are plenty of factors to blame, from the recent leap in registrations to beat the VED changes to the current ‘interesting’ political climate, as well as a growing dislike of diesel-engined cars.
But there could be more shocks to come as the Bank of England signals its concern over easy car finance, which could see more potential buyers failing credit checks and being kept out.
Which could start to have a big impact on numbers before long.
