Toyota GR Super Sport Concept heading for production
The Toyota GR Super Sport Concept looks to be heading in to production as a 986bhp Toyota Hypercar, challenging cars like the Aston Martin Valkyrie.
It’s Le Mans weekend, and Toyota has turned up with its GR Super Sport Concept and has announced plans to put it in to production, complete with a 986bhp Toyota Racing Hybrid powertrain. Which was a bit unexpected. It looks like Toyota’s decision to deliver a production Hypercar is probably down to the FIA launching a new top class competition allowing cars like the Aston Martin Valkyrie to race, and Toyota look like they want to be part of that with a production hypercar.
The GR Super Sport Concept is based on the TS050 Hybrid Racer with the same carbon fibre structure and 2.4 litre V6 petrol hybrid delivering 986bhp to all four wheels.
Toyota say they have started development of the new ‘Super Sports’ car using cutting edge hybrid electric systems and fuel efficiency technologies.
Shigeki Tomoyama, Toyota Gazoo Racing President, said:
We started this project because we believe that creating a super sports car that delivers the same appeal as the TS050 Hybrid greatly adds to Toyota’s involvement in the WEC. And at some point in the near future, customers will have a chance to get behind the wheel of this incredible machine and experience its astonishing power and driving performance.
Toyota are giving no timescale for the arrival of a production version of the GR Super Sport, but the new Hypercar class at Le Mans is due in 2020. Which gives us a clue.
