Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis 3413 GT, up for auction with £34 MILLION estimate

A 1962 Ferrari GTO – chassis 3413 GT – is heading for auction at RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale this August with an estimate of £34 million.

There were only 36 Ferrari 250 GTO models built, so one coming up for sale is a special occasion, and an opportunity to marvel at how they seem to rise inexorably in value as the most prized automotive art on the planet.

Just a few weeks ago we reported the sale of Ferrari 250 GTO S/N 4153 GT, which appeared to sell for a remarkable £52 million in a private sale, and now we get a second 250 GTO on the market, this one heading for auction at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction in August.

This particular 250 GTO – chassis 3413 GT – was built in 1962 and used by Ferrari as a test car and driven by Phil Hill in the 1962 Targa Florio, and was then sold as a regular Ferrari to Edoardo Lualdi-Gabardi who entered 10 races in it – winning nine and coming second in the other.

It was then acquired by Gianni Bulgari (one of those Bulgaris) and went on to win the 1963 and ’64 Targa Florio, and eventually ended up with Dr Greg Whitten, a Microsoft man.

This 250 GTO still retains its original engine, gearbox and back axle, and a Series II body fitted by Carrozzeria Scaglietti in 1964.

RM Sotheby’s Shelby Myers said:

This marks just the third time that a GTO has been offered for public sale in the new millennium. I can think of no better place than our flagship Monterey event, an auction that has borne witness to the record-smashing sale of some of the most important cars in history, for the presentation of such an exceptional example of Ferrari’s most successful racer and the world’s most sought-after collector car, full stop.

The fact that the GTO exists as it did in period, along with Dr. Whitten’s long-term, enthusiastic ownership, only adds to the car’s impeccable pedigree.

With an estimate of £34 million, this 250 GTO probably won’t fetch as much as 4153 GT, but it could well beat the previous £32 million price for a Ferrari 250 GTO in auction.

RM Sotheby’s 2018 Monetery sale is 24-25 August.
