Infiniti Project 10
The Infiniti Project 10 has been revealed at Pebble Beach, and it’s a ‘Speedster’ imagining of Infiniti’s past to proclaim an exciting electric future for Nissan’s posh brand.
The Mercedes EQ Silver Arrow Concept at Pebble Beach is designed to point at an electric future for Mercedes whilst proclaiming that future is firmly set in Mercedes history. You might imagine, if you didn’t know better, that the Infiniti Project 10, also revealed at Pebble, is an electric concept car using Infiniti’s history to point at its electric future too. But of course, Infiniti doesn’t really have a history.
That wasn’t enough to stop them doing something very similar at Pebble last year with the Project 9 Concept, and they’re back again this year with an imagined Speedster Concept (which looks rather like the V8 and V10-powered Veritas RS from a few years ago), setting out their stall for an electric future at Infiniti.
Infiniti say they have ‘looked back to go forward’ with the Project 10 car, planning to have every new car electrified from 2021, with the single seat Project 10 meant to emphasise Infinit’s driver appeal and deliver design elements we’ll see in future electrified Infinitis.
Karim Habib, Infinit’s Design Boss, said:
Flexible vehicle platforms create new possibilities for powertrain and chassis layouts.
Electrification provides new opportunities for the design and layout of our cars. In accommodating batteries and electric motors, or employing smaller gasoline engines, we aren’t bound by the same physical restrictions.
Prototype 10 shows how an electrified powertrain could fit within a lean, lightweight and daring body, and this enabled us to rethink the fundamental layout of the car.
Despite being somewhat cynical about Infiniti’s imagined history, we have to say the Project 10 car does look good. Whether it will translate in to stunning electric cars from Infiniti in the future is another question.
