Jaguar Land Rover developing new 3D Heads-Up and entertainment system

Jaguar Land Rover is developing new 3D heads-up display technology which would also allow projection of 3D movies for passengers.

Jaguar Land Rover announces clever 3D technology which promises to deliver real-time information to the driver and keep passengers entertained with 3D movies steamed before their very eyes. Although it’s not exactly showroom ready yet.

JLR say they have engineers working on the new technology which will deliver the new 3D system to project safety alerts – stuff like hazard detection and Sat Nav directions – in front of the driver, with augmented reality adding perception of depth so the images appear to be on the road. JLR say research in Germany shows that Stereoscopic 3D displays in cars improve reaction times.

But the system isn’t just about delivering augmented information to drivers, but will also be able to keep passengers immersed and involved with 3D movies, with head and eye tracking following the user’s position to deliver real 3D images without the need to wear silly glasses.

The research, and it is just research for now, is running in partnership with the Centre for Advanced Photonics and Electronics (CAPE) at University of Cambridge. JLR’s Valerian Meijering said:

Not only does it provide a much richer experience for customers, but it also forms part of our Destination Zero roadmap; helping us to move towards a safer, more intuitive and smarter future, for everybody.

So now you know. Although when this augmented reality will become a reality we’ve no idea.
