Next Porsche Boxster and Cayman will be ELECTRIC
Porsche is planning to make the next generation Boxster and Cayman electric models, running alongside the existing ICE models. Just like the Macan.
All the Porsche news in recent weeks has centered around the debut of the electric Porsche Taycan as they reveal the future direction for Porsche with a first electric car which is truly appealing. But we already have a reasonable idea of where Porsche is going with electric models, and the Taycan will be followed next by the Taycan Cross Turismo for those wanting a sort of crossover Taycan.
The next step after the two Taycan models will be to go mainstream with electric cars, and that means launching an electric Macan in 2021, although that won’t, at least initially, mean the end of the ICE Macan, as the existing model will continue for a few more years at least alongside the new Macan EV.
Now it seems the Macan will provide the stepping stone for Porsche to electrify the Boxster and Cayman, with Top Gear all but getting confirmation from Porsche’s Lutz Meschke that the next generation Boxster and Cayman will be electric cars.
The new PPE electric platform Porsche has developed (with Audi) for the new electric Macan will provide the basis for a new generation of electric Boxsters and Caymans and, just like the Taycan and Macan, they will come with an 800v architecture and rapid charging. And, just like the Macan, they will be sold alongside the existing ICE models. For a while at least.
Eventually, after the electric Cayman and Boxster, Porsche will set about electric versions of the Cayenne and Panamera. But will the 911 go electric?
