The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 is revealed as the first proper electric AMG, boasting up to 750bhp from its upgraded electric motors.
You didn’t think Mercedes would be happy just delivering a new electric S-Class with the EQS, did you? Of course not, and here’s the proof that, even in a world of electric EQ Mercedes’, AMG is the pinnacle and this – the new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 – is the proof that AMG will thunder on even without ICE to play with. Not the first electric AMG – that title goes to the AMG SLS Electric Drive – but this is the first proper electric AMG. And it has impressive stats, although expect an impressive price to accompany it.
Aimed squarely at cars like the Porsche Taycan Turbo S and Audi RS e-tron GT, the AMG EQS gets a proper AMG makeover with AMG fettled motors front and back to boost power and torque to 649bhp and 710lb/ft of torque, but opt for the Dynamic Plus Package and you’ll have 750bhp and 752lb/ft of torque to play with in Race Start Mode, enough to get to 62mph in 3.4 seconds.
The motors are powered by a 107.8kWh battery with a range of up to 360 miles – and charging rates of up to 200kW – with variable levels of recuperation available via flappy paddles, with tweaked AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with active dampers, rear-wheel steering and a range of driving modes and ‘Sound’ modes.
Despite AMG ‘sporty’ titivations to the looks – including bespoke ‘grille’ panel, rear spoiler and new bumpers – it’s still as slippery as the regular EQS, and the interior boasts the same ‘Hyperscreen’ setup but with AMG-specific modes and settings.
The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 will go on sale later this year at prices yet to be revealed.
