Chevrolet Captiva LTZ Revealed

May 4, 2010 By Cars UK

The Chevrolet Captiva LTZ

The new, range-topping Chevrolet Captiva LTZ

Chevrolet has launched a new range-topping Captiva Soft-Roader – the Chevrolet Captiva LTZ – with extra toys and a bigger price tag.

Simmer. Don’t get too excited. Chevrolet have launched a new, range-topping model of the soft-roader Captiva on to the market. And it’s £20,000 cheaper than a Range Rover Sport. So Chevrolet tell us.

Joshing apart, the Captiva is probably the most able of Chevy’s offerings in the UK. That doesn’t make it a great buy, but it is a cheaper way to get in to a Vauxhall Antara if you felt the urge (no, not many do) as it’s the self same car. Both made in Korea. By Daewoo.

This particular soft-roader is the range-topping Chevrolet Captiva LTZ. It offers goodies like leather, Climate, Cruise, electric seats, auto lights and wipers and privacy glass. You also get – for the first time in a Captiva – a touchscreen SatNav and reversing camera. Which makes the standard kit on the Captiva LTZ more than decent.

Power comes from a 2.0 litre, 148bhp VCDi which offers 0-60 in something around 12 seconds and offers 38mpg as a manual and 32mpg as an auto. Which probably tells you all you need to know about the auto.

It’s not a terrible buy, the Chevrolet Captiva. And the LTZ has a decent spec. But if you wanted to define the opposite of cool in this sector this is probably it. And the depreciation won’t be horribly healthy either. But it’s a decent drive – in a soft sort of way – and doesn’t look at all bad apart from the horrible grill.

If you need a soft-roader of this size we’d probably opt for one of the PSA/Mitsubishi lot, something like the Peugeot 4007 or the new Mitsubishi Outlander.

But the Captiva is probably a better bet than the Vauxhall Antara. Even if this range-topper costs £27,305 for the manual and £28,630 for the auto.

I have owned my Chevrolet Captiva 2.0 VCDi LTX AUTO for a year now and I can honestly say that it has been a pleasure to own. Having owned and driven everything from a Ford to a BMW and Citroen to a Mercedes I’ve had my fair share of vehicles to compare it to.

There are far too many so called ‘experts’ out there who are quick to criticise Chevrolet’s Captiva but let me tell you this, the Captiva is a European spin-off of a tried, tested and proven platform from GM in the United States. Remember, nearly ALL SUV’s and 4×4’s in the USA are Chevrolet or other GM owned brand.

I have compared my Captiva to other SUV’s on the road in the UK and without a doubt the Captiva is the best value for money – my own model, the LTX is every bit as good as other similar sized SUV’s available, the 7 seat configuration beat every other SUV in it’s class when it was launched because nobody else offered it. This can also be said about the adaptive 4 Wheel Drive, again nobody offered it but now everyone has copied.

Do yourself a favour, don’t listen to so called experts who tell you that the Captiva is no good – go and have a go for yourself and you will wonder where these people get their information from!

Good work Chevrolet – I’d buy another Captiva any day!!!
