Datsun GO+ arrives with 7 seats. It’s not a looker

The Datsun GO+ is a super-sized version of the Datsun GO budget offering for emerging economies, and it comes with 7 seats and little kerb appeal.

Back in July, Nissan revealed that the first offering in their new budget range that resurrected an old name – the Datsun GO – that was essentially an old Micra with little tech and a pretty unappealing look. But now they’ve gone one better – the Datsun GO+.

Actually, they’ve gone two better with the Go + as it adds a small bench in the boot to take a couple of small passengers who don’t mind having all the comforts of a suitcase stuck in a boot.

Nissan hasn’t exactly pushed the boat out in the design studio to create the GO+ and seem to have just welded in an extra bit behind the back doors to make room for the small bench in the boot.

The wheelbase stays the same, but the GO+ gets stretched to 3995mm (210mm extra) and is powered by the same basic 1.2 litre petrol engine and five-speed manual ‘box as the regular GO.

We have to applaud Nissan’s ambition to make the Go and Go+ both affordable and practical for buyers in emerging markets (well, Indonesia to start with), and at prices expected to be under £7k for both the Go and Go+ we assume Nissan’s declaration that the GO+ was built by engineers after “…a careful study of the needs, lifestyle and driving patterns of local customers” fulfils their needs.

But why does a budget car have to look so unappealing?
