Gumpert – makers of extreme road-going race cars – has been brought back from the financial brink with investment from Asia.
There are some bonkers car manufacturers out there. But precious few make cars quite as bonkers as the Gumpert. Or, some would argue, quite as ugly. But not so ugly you don’t covet them After all, the Gumpert Apollo S – with its 4.2 litre, twin-turbo Audi V8 – will get to 120mph in less than 9 seconds and on up to a top speed of over 220 mph. So it’s no sloth.
We’re ashamed to say we hadn’t realised how quiet Gumpert has been of late. When we look back it’s over a year since we reported any news from Gumpoert, and that was when a Gumpert Apollo S et a Nurburgring record (doesn’t every car maker?) of 7:11.57. Which is slower than the Radical SR8 record (everyone seems to ignore that) but very impressive.
But since then; nothing. And it turns out that Gumpert has been having a bit of a hard time financially and had to lay off most of their staff. Which I suppose you could argue is hardly surprising in the teeth of the worst recession to hit the motor industry in several generations.
No it seems a White Knight has ridden in to rescue Gumpert from probable oblivion. All we know is the money is coming from Asia, the deal has been signed and Gumpert are getting their staff back in and back to work. Outstanding bills have been paid and production of the Apollo resumed and work on a new model for 2011 is underway.
So it looks like GUMPERT Sportwagenmanufaktur GmbH is back in business.
A good news story.
