The Lamborghini Centenario, a run of just 40 titivated Aventadors to celebrate Ferruccio Lamborghini’s centenary, gets a UK debut at Salon Prive.
The Lamborghini Centenario was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in the Spring as a tribute to Ferruccio Lamborghini – the founder of Lamborghini – on what would have been his 100th birthday. And now it’s getting a UK debut at this month’s Salon Prive in September.Just 40 Centenarios are being built to celebrate, of which 20 will be coupes and 20 will be roadsters, and Lamborghini are charging a rather extreme £1.65 million each.
For your £1.65 million or so the Centenario gets a 759bhp V12 under the skin, lots of sharply angled carbon fibre to improve aerodynamics as well as a huge back wing and monster air ducts – perfect fodder for bedroom wall posters (assuming teenage boys still have posters on their bedroom walls).
But despite the monstrous price tag – a sum of money that would buy two Porsche 918 Spyders or a LaFerrari or McLaren P1 with more than half a million in change – the car Lamborghini are using to celebrate the birth of their founder is really just a titivated Aventador.
Not that there’s anything wrong with an Aventador with more power and more extreme looks, but to extract a price that’s five times what the ranger-topping Aventador Superveloce costs, does strike us as extraordinary.
But the fact Lamborghini are milking the market for revenue with the Centenario doesn’t stop it being a stunning spectacle, and you can catch it in the flesh at Salon Prive at Blenheim Palace from 1-3 September.
And smile at how gullible the buyers are.
