Hyundai NEXO is Hyundai's replacement for the ix35 Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Hyundai NEXO is Hyundai’s replacement for the ix35 Hydrogen Fuel Cell

The Hyundai Nexo is Hyundai’s new hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle with more range and power, and has been revealed at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

We’ve already seen the new hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle from Hyundai, because Hyundai revealed a photo a few days ago. But now we know what it’s called – the Hyundai Nexo.

The Nexo is Hyundai’s showcase for its latest technology, and a platform from which to develop safety systems and autonomous driving capabilities, and it boasts a new hydrogen Fuel Cell which is both more powerful and more efficient.

The Nexo has a range of 500 miles, although the Fuel Cell has shrunk by 5 per cent to 95kW, with a 40kW battery and an output of 135kW (181bhp).

That, combined with the Nexo’s lower weight, means this FCEV can scoot to 62mph in a very acceptable 9.5 seconds.

Built on a new platform, the Nexo is bigger than the ix35 – 262mm longer and 38mm wider – although it’s a bit more crossover and a bit less SUV as it sits 25mm lower too.

It features stuff like Hyundai’s next-generation Blind Spot View which shows the river their position in relation to other road users, Lane Following Assist which centres the Nexo in the lane and Remote Smart Parking Assist which can park or ‘un-park’ without a driver.

With a big range, emissions-free driving and the ability to refuel in just a few minutes, the Hyundai Nexo paints a perfect picture of an emissions-free future.

All we need now is economies of scale to make the FCEV as affordable as a hybrid – and a hydrogen refuelling infrastructure – and BEVs will be yesterday’s news.

But it’ll take a while, however good the new Hyundai Nexo is.

Why bother with the hydrogen engine, just put in a bigger battery and save the massive cost, and risk, of hydrogen.
