Infiniti Q & QX: The new Infiniti names

December 18, 2012 By Cars UK

Infiniti has announced it’s changing its car nomenclature with all saloons and Coupes changing to Infiniti Q and all SUVs and Crossovers to Infiniti QX.

New Infiniti Names

What’s in a name? That which we call M, G, FX and EX by any other name would smell as sweet. Although, as far as Infiniti is concerned, all will be improved by changing their names.

Infiniti has revealed that they are changing their nomenclature across the range from 2013, with all saloons and coupes taking on the ‘Q’ badge and all SUVs and Crossovers the ‘QX’ badge. Which means The M and G become the Q and the FX and EX (and, for the rest of the world outside Europe, the JX too) become the QX.

It no doubt will make it a bit clearer which type of vehicle you’re buying, but it will blur the line between the different cars in Infiniti’s range. But maybe that’s the idea?

So the new Infiniti G Series due at the Detroit Auto Show in January will now be known as the Infiniti Q50, the G Coupe and Convertible will become the G60, the FX will become the Infiniti QX70 and the EX the Infiniti QX50 (plus the JX becomes the QX70 and the QX becomes the QX80).

How exactly Infiniti will differentiate the different powertrain options isn’t clear, although we suppose it’ll be an extra badge saying ‘Hybrid’ or ‘3.7’ or whatever.

Johan de Nysschen, Infiniti President, said of the changes:

Over the past few months, we have talked at length with our retailers, our customers, and our business partners about our brand.

The need for a new identity and direction to promote consumer familiarity with our model range as we expand the portfolio became evident. To achieve this, we clearly needed a simple and consistent nomenclature framework. After exhaustive research and evaluation, we concluded that ‘Q’ captured the inspiration within the next generation of Infiniti models, as well as emphasising our performance credentials while harking back to our heritage with the Q45 – Infiniti’s first iconic flagship product in 1989.

Thanks to Audi for the plan.
