Jaguar F-Type gets new 3.0 V6 Supercharged – 2 new Jag engines revealed

Jaguar F-Type gets the new 3.0 litre V6 S/C

Jaguar reveals two new petrol engines at Beijing, a 3.0 litre V6 Supercharged and a 2.0 litre 4-cylinder turbo.

When Jaguar revealed the F-Type at Frankfurt last year (well, the C-X16 concept) it was powered by a new V6 Supercharged engine – basically a cut-down version of Jaguar’s V8. And now that engine is officially part of Jaguar’s engine line-up.

For the new Jaguar F-Type the 3.0 litre V6 S/C gets a full-fat 375bhp and 332lb/ft of torque. Jaguar aren’t saying what performance that will yield – not yet, at least – but we’d expect it to offer sub 5 seconds to 62mph and with average economy the right side of 30mpg.

The same V6 S/C will also be offered in the XJ and XF, but in a slightly detuned form offering 335bhp. It’s designed to replace the current naturally aspirated V8 where it will offer very similar performance – 0-60mpg in 5.7 seconds – by with much improved economy. Crucially, the new V6 comes in at 2995cc, making it a much cheaper import for China.

Also revealed at Beijing is a new 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engine for Jaguar which is basically the 2.0 litre lump from the Evoque (which, in turn, is also the 2.0 litre Ecoboost from Ford). The new 2.0 I4 Ti 240 engine replaces the (now defunct in Europe) 3.0 litre petrol in the XJ and XF.

Power is the same in the Jag as in the Evoque with 238bhp and 251lb/ft of torque, but it has been turned lengthways and, at just 138kg, is Jaguar’s lightest ever engine, which bodes well for dynamics and economy.

Jaguar say the XJ and XF with the 2.0 I4 Ti 240 engine will get to 60mph in 7.5 seconds and, we would guess, average mid-30s mpg.

Both the new 3.0 litre S/C and the 2.0 litre I4 Ti will be available in the XJ and XF from the end of 2012 in the UK, Europe, North America and China.
