Kia Futuron Concept
The Kia Futuron Concept is revealed as an electric car previewing the direction of Kia’s future EVs, combining sports car and SUV.
Is this, the Kia Futuron Concept, a look at an upcoming electric Kia? No, but it is a look at the sort of direction Kia is heading as electric powertrains open up more flexible designs.Kia describe the Futuron – a combination of ‘Future’ and ‘On’ – as a sports car on an SUV platform, and that delivers an unusually proportioned car some 4850mm long but just 1500mm high. So it’s as long as a Porsche Cayenne but almost 200mm lower and has a big 3000mm wheelbase.
The sports car look features a new interpretation of the ‘Tiger Nose’ grille which stretches the width of the car and incorporates LED headlights and lights up, a diamond-shaped panoramic glasshouse roof and flowing bodywork.
Sitting under the Futuron’s body is an electric powertrain with high capacity battery Kia promise will deliver lightening fast response from its cutting-edge e-AWD system. But Kia aren’t inclined to share its performance potential.
Inside it’s all designed around the passengers as Kia say the Futuron is Level 4 Autonomous – meaning the driver doesn’t need to be in control – with front seats which recline in to ‘First Class Cabin’ mode and a steering wheel which can retract in to the dashboard, a dashboard which wraps round and features a user interface boasting AI, negating the need for actual screens.
It all sounds very interesting. But not exactly ‘Now’.
