Lamborghini Urus SUV OFFICIALLY going in to production

The Lamborghini Urus SUV is officially going in to production, with help from the Italian government ensuring it is built in Italy, not in Bratislava like other VW SUVs.

It was only yesterday we reported Lamborghini was about to announce that the Urus SUV was about to be signed-off for production and would be built in Italy thanks to incentives from the Italian government, and today the news is official.

Lamborghini has announced that VW has signed-off on a production version of the 2012 Urus SUV Concept, that it will be built at Sant’Agata following significant investment to defectively double Lamborghini production in an expanded 150,000 square metre facility that will accommodate the 500 new Lamborghini employees needed.

It’s a big new direction for Lamborghini, but one they feel will help them have a profitable future and, like Porsche, have a profitable SUV to make their sports cars viable. But what will the Urus SUV be like?

By still referring to their new SUV as the Urus (even of they end up changing its name for production) it’s clear the 2012 concept gives us clear direction. But things will have to change.

For a start, by the time the Urus arrives in 2018 the design is going to be six years old, so you can expect a look that makes the Urus look fresh and new but without changing so much that Lamborghini have to win hearts and minds all over again.

Under the skin will be the same platform that underpins the new Audi Q7 (and will underpin VW’s other extreme SUV – the Bentley Bentayga – when that arrives), but rather than lots of carbon fibre you can expect lots of aluminium as Lamborghini look at practical considerations.

Under the bonnet you won’t get a naturally aspirated V10 or V12, but something that offers a wodge of torque, lots of performance and decent economy. That will almost certainly be a turbocharged V8 (a first for Lamborghini) with a hybrid option in the mix too. What is highly unlikely is a diesel Urus.

So there’s lots to discover as Lamborghini head towards a 2018 launch for the Urus. But a 2018 Urus is happening, and that’s official.
