Lamborghini Urus SUV WILL be built in Italy

It’s reported that Lamborghini has secured tax breaks from the Italian government to build the new Urus SUV in Italy, creating up to 500 jobs.

Earlier this month we reported that Lamborghini was in talks with the Italian government, with tax breaks worth up to €100 million for Lamborghini to build the new Urus SUV in Italy, rather than in Bratislava where most of the VW group’s SUVs are built. And it looks like the talks were successful.

Automotive News are reporting that Lamborghini has secured tax breaks worth €80 million to secure Italian production of the Urus, with Lamborghini employing an extra 500 people to work on the Urus’s production.

It seems Rupert Stadler, Audi CEO, and Stephan Winkleman, Lamborghini boss, will make the announcement tomorrow – 27 May – at a press conference with Italy’s Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi.

What’s not entirely clear is just how extensive ‘production’ will be. Will Lamborghini be building the Urus from scratch in Italy, or will it, as seems more likely, be bolted together in Italy with the bodies being shipped from Bratislava and put together on home soil?

Whichever scenario it is, the Urus is clearly on the way, and will be considered very much an Italian car, built by Italians in Italy.

In the process, it seems certain the launching of the Urus – Lamborghini’s first SUV since the LM002 ended production in the early 1990s – will double Lamborghini’s sales.
