Mazda has revealed a single teaser image for a new sports car concept to debut at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, and it could be a new rotary-engined Mazda RX-9.
Any car concept when teased leads to speculation about what it foreshadows, and the release this morning of a single teaser photo of a new Mazda Sports Car concept heading for a debut at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show has done just that. And it looks like this could be the return of the Wankel – a new rotary-engined Mazda RX-9 perhaps, just as we thought four years ago?
Mazda doesn’t have much to say about the concept except that it’s a modern sports car but “…retains a sense of lineage and authenticity”, and wraps Mazda’s sports car history up in a single concept.
Of course, that could mean a bigger take on the MX-5, but Mazda has also revealed it’s taking the Cosmo Sport to Tokyo – which just happens to be Mazda’s first Wankel car – which perhaps gives us a clue?
If this is a rotary Wankel-engined Mazda Sports car, then we have to assume Mazda has cracked the age-old Wankel issues of poor low-down torque, high fuel consumption, oil leaks and a propensity to eat rotors and leak oil.
It’s possible that some of those issues have been addressed if Mazda has decided to make this new concept a Hybrid Wankel, which would make sense.
We’ll find out between now and when the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show starts on 30 October.
