Following recent rumours that McLaren are to build a 2+2 version of the MP4-12C, McLaren has made it clear that under no circumstances will it happen.
The Interweb is full of rumour. Some would say it’s full of rumour and conjecture and little else. Which would be a tad too harsh. But there is plenty of rumour without any substance doing the rounds at any time.
So when we hear a story our readers may find interesting we try to do homework to see how much credibility there is. If there’s enough we’ll run the story with the caveat that it’s rumour, but with substance. If it’s just twaddle we don’t even bother reporting it.
So when we started to hear that McLaren were going to stretch the MP4-12C to make a 2+2 we knew there was a car editor somewhere with an empty page to fill, no story and no real knowledge. There is as much chance – probably less – of McLaren producing a 2+2 12C as there is Ferrari stretching the 458 Italia to make a limo for wealthy WAGS to take their Tango’d friends clubbing.
So it’s good to see that McLaren has jumped on this garbage and stated categorically that it’s not true. Although McLaren state that they are in the business of producing pure, high performance sports cars with two seats and a mid engine, we wouldn’t go as far as to suggest McLaren won’t – at some point – look at other options. But if it does, it won’t create the car by stretching a mid-engined supercar. It’ll do it from scratch.
At least this is one rumour that can’t now run and run. Hopefully.
