McLaren Special Operations - your McLaren, your way

McLaren has officially launched McLaren Special Operations, a division responsible for delivery of bespoke projects for McLaren sports cars.

We reported last week that McLaren had taken a customised MP4-12C to Pebble Beach and that it heralded the start of ‘McLaren Exclusive’ to customise customer cars. We were close, but its actually McLaren Special Operations – and not McLaren Exclusive – that’s doing the customising.

But the principle is the same; McLaren will do pretty much anything you want done to your McLaren – as they always have – but with the McLaren Road Car division growing all the time it will all now come under the banner of the new McLaren Special Operations division.

So what’s on offer in the way of bespoke stuff from McLaren?

In truth, you can have just about anything you want. As the man from McLaren said, “…we never say no; we just tell the customer how much it will cost.” In other words, if your pockets are deep enough then McLaren Special Operations will do anything you want.

To illustrate some of the tamer things you can do you an MP4-12C, McLaren took one to Pebble Beach with:

…matte Volcano Orange paintwork, a gloss black roof, diamond cut finish wheels with gloss black inners, MP4-12C branded carbon sill panels, carbon steering wheel, front wheel arch louvres and carbon fibre engine cover vents, rear deck vent and wiper system cover.

But if you want your MP4-12C in sky blue pink with yellow dots, green alloys and purple leather – that’s fine.

McLaren’s man in charge of Special Operations said:

For nearly twenty years we have been closely managing relationships with owners of the McLaren F1, and understanding their needs is a great foundation on which to launch a service that will now include 12C customers.
McLaren Automotive already offers 12C customers extensive options to personalise their car. However we recognise some owners have specific tastes and we have the knowledge and capability to design, engineer and produce almost anything a customer may desire for their 12C.

And, just like Topsy, the Special Operations will grow like mad as the next generation of McLaren cars – the New F1 and the Porsche 911 competitor – start to show up over the next few years.
