The Mercedes-Benz Generation EQ electric SUV Coupe Concept has been revealed at the Paris Motor Show, underpinned by a new scalable platform.
This, boys and girls, is the future according to Mercedes: the Mercedes-Benz Generation EQ Concept, the first look at Mercedes’ vision of an electric car future.
The ‘EQ’ bit is supposed to signify ‘Electric Intelligence’, and the concept is built on a new scalable platform which has been designed specifically for battery electric vehicles and can be scaled to accommodate everything from a cabriolet to this SUV Coupe EV.
The EQ Concept here has a pair of electric motors – one for each axle – delivering four-wheel drive, with up to 400bhp and 516lb/ft of torque on hand to deliver impressive performance, and a range, say Mercedes, of 310 miles from its 70kWh batteries.
Inside, the EQ Concept features what looks like a new direction for Mercedes interiors, with touch sensitive switchgear and organic LED displays
Dr Dieter Zetsche, Mercedes boss, said:
The mobility of the future at Mercedes-Benz will stand on four pillars: Connected, Autonomous, Shared und Electric. ‘Generation EQ’ is the logical fusion of all four pillars.
The emission-free automobile is the future. And our new EQ brand goes far beyond electric vehicles. EQ stands for a comprehensive electric ecosystem of services, technologies and innovations.
No doubt the EQ will look more mainstream when it turns in to a production Mercedes EV SUV in a year or three, but we reckon Tesla should start to formulate and exit plan some time soon.
